M&A in the SME sector – exclusive study

Mergers and acquisitions (M&A) are often associated with large corporations. In Germany in particular, however, SMEs are also a key driver of this so-called M&A market. There are over 30,000 companies in the German SME sector with a turnover volume of between EUR 10 and 250 million – most of them are M&A players. 12,000 of these companies are owner-managed.

Growth strategies and optimization of their own business model are keeping the owners busy. Added to this are the challenges posed by digitalization and, for two years now, the effects of the coronavirus pandemic. SMEs are being asked to reposition themselves and explore future potential. M&A is an effective means of coping with these diverse changes – and the topic presents SMEs with many other challenges.

The Bundesverband Mergers & Acquisitions e.V. (BM&A), which has been intensively involved in the area of company acquisitions and sales since 2002, has conducted a survey in cooperation with the University of Lancaster and the University of Bamberg, the results of which are to be presented in a study. The aim of the study is to obtain a comprehensive picture of the use of M&A in SMEs.

The initiators are happy to receive suitable participants for the survey – answering the questions should take no more than ten minutes. All information will be treated anonymously and in strict confidence and used exclusively for purely scientific and association-related purposes. The results of the study will be presented at the Mittelstandstag 2022.
